Announcing the inaugural “WHS – Sunday Salon at 411″ event.

Pre-Capone Chicago Saloon Culture and the Rise of Prohibition.   

From the post-Chicago fire population boom to Prohibition, Chicago was a magnet for everyone from struggling immigrants to extravagant socialites.  One pastime they all had in common was a specific and uniquely “Chicago” drinking culture.  Bill will explore the lives of those whose ethnic neighborhood pub and opulent downtown bar lives changed when prohibition came to pass.  An Irish whiskey and German pilsner reception will follow the presentation.  Bill Savage teaches Chicago literature, history and culture at Northwestern and has led Newberry Seminars.  He has worked as a bartender for over 30 years.

Mr. Savage will have copies of his book “Chicago by Day and Night: The Pleasure Seeker’s Guide to the Paris of America“, available for sale at the Museum, and on Amazon.
