The Hubbard Woods Studio was the brainchild of Bill Thomas, a transplanted Canadian, whom my father met at the Chicago Arena where Bill was an instructor with a large student following. When the arena closed, Bill decided to join with fellow Canadian, Steve Kormylo, and my father, to fill the need for a year-round, indoor skating surface.

Winnetka’s “North Shore Line” Electric Inter-urban Service

Fifty years ago, an inter-urban, electrified railroad known as the Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee Railroad (the “North Shore Line”) ran its last trains through Winnetka. The North Shore Line had begun regular service through Winnetka, traveling between Evanston and Waukegan, in 1899.

"K" is for Kinney Store

The southwest corner of Oak and Linden Streets has changed a lot in 140 years. The one thing that has remained constant is the concentration of traffic there. One of the busiest intersections in the village today, it also was a hub of activity in the early 1850’s when the Kinney Store was built at the corner.

The Winnetka Bank

The village of Winnetka had no bank when M. K. Meyer acquired a safe for his general store in the late 1800s. After learning about the new safe, so many of Winnetka’s 1,000 residents prevailed upon Meyer to keep their important papers that he decided to establish a bank in a corner of the store.
