Cecilia Gigiolio, a Social Studies teacher at Washburne School, attended the January 15, 2007 Martin Luther King in Winnetka panel discussion with several of her eighth grade students. The next day, the class had a spirited discussion on the impact of Dr. King’s speech. Several students expressed concern that this important historic event would be forgotten if not given proper commemoration.

Telephone service in Winnetka has a long and interesting history. In 1885, 32 years after Mr. And Mrs. Charles E. Peck settled in the area which later became the Village of Winnetka, the Chicago Telephone Directory showed that telephone service was available at a telephone toll station in the Gage & Meyer general store.

Upon hearing of the tragedy last fall when a school bus was struck by a train in Fox River Grove, we in Winnetka were again grateful for that prudent decision to separate the grade of the streets and the tracks in our community. Unfortunately, it took another terrible accident to expedite plans that had been talked about for over five decades.
