Cultivating Creativity: Winnetka’s Artistic Organizations

The North Shore Art League

In 1924, a group of inspired Winnetkans formed the North Shore Art League to provide a place for artists to develop and exhibit their work and to foster “a higher appreciation of art in the community.” Since then, the Art League has done just that, and continues to do so today. The Children’s Theatre of Winnetka

The Children’s Theatre of Winnetka was founded in 1974 when Community House drama teacher Barbara Weldon and executive director Tom Fritts agreed to develop a theater company exclusively for children. After its first production (A Christmas Carol in 1975) was a success, the organization grew and continues to put on popular plays today. The Winnetka Fortnightly

An offshoot of the long-term and successful Chicago Fortnightly, the Winnetka Fortnightly was founded on the heels of the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1921. Encouraged and empowered by obtaining the right to vote, writers presented papers to “enlighten and inform” their members. Since then, members have met regularly to share their creative pieces and discuss the writing process. Learn more about the history of this inspiring organization. CLICK HERE!
