2017 Winnetka Preservation Awards

The Winnetka Landmarks Preservation Commission presented preservation awards to the owners of six private residences at the Village Council meeting on November 7, 2017. This year there were two awards presented for restoration and four for rehabilitation.
For restoration, Nan and Wally Greenough worked with architect Ken Behles, Lynch Construction and Nature’s Perspective landscapers to restore the original appearance of their house at the corner of Maple and Oak Streets. Based on 1940s photos of the house on file at the Winnetka Historical Society, the Greenough’s team was able to recreate brick corner posts with limestone caps and balls and a wood railing, as well as functional wooden shutters and plantings of a suitable scale.
Carter Ruehrdanz and Rose Selker worked with architect Doug Reynolds to restore their house at 635 Maple. Look for more details on the restoration of this beautiful home in the Spring/Summer 2018 issue of the Gazette.
The four awards presented for rehabilitation, including additions that are sympathetic to the building’s original design, went to Dave and Eliza Bartels of 265 Poplar Street, Kevan and Catherine Comstock of 854 Prospect Avenue, Emilee and Brian Wolfe at 864 Bryant Avenue, and Alan R. Gordon of 188 Church Road.
The Comstocks worked with architect Chip Hackley to rehabilitate a 1907 “Cape Cod”cottage designed by Winnetka architect William Otis in 1907. While they completely renovated the interior and added a new master bedroom and bath, garage, and sports barn, they kept the spirit of the vintage home intact, including saving the brick paver in the former entry that reads, “The house that Edith and Allen Haines built.”
Alan Gordon worked with architect Louis Natenshon and consultant Ines Hegedus-Garcia to build a new garage and restore courtyard walls in the Mediterranean Revival style of the original house. The project restored a number of decorative details that had been covered up over the last 90+ years, including concrete relief designs on the chimney, an iron entrance “coat of arms,”and a concrete fountain.
Congratulations to the award winners!
